When I wrote a recent article, the 10 Best Cardigan Knitting Patterns for Fall, I was surprised how many people emailed me requesting men's sweaters!
Men’s sweaters are hard to find. In fact, there are only a fraction of the amount of men’s sweaters patterns available in comparison to women’s sweaters.
However, there are some really nice men’s sweater patterns out there, you just have to dig for them. I rounded up the 10 best men’s sweater knitting patterns for you to enjoy.
They include cardigans, pullovers, vests, and even a hoodie that feature colorwork, stripes, cables, and texture.
Whether you are knitting for your husband, son, grandson, nephew, uncle, grandfather, cousin, or friend…there’s sure to be a project in here your guy will love to wear.

#1. His Vest Knitting Pattern
From Churchmouse Yarns and Teas…the vest you’ve been asking for. And asking for!
The slightly high V-neck has a modern look, the ribbed arm bands extend just to the shoulder’s edge, and the easily-adapted length is designed for hands-in-pockets ease.
Equally right for business or casual, it fits perfectly over a dress shirt of T-shirt. Whether your shirts are ‘trim’ cut or ‘traditional’, you’ll find a perfectly comfortable size.
Uses DK weight tweed yarn.
#2. Scottish Ale Sweater Knitting Pattern
Designed by Cheryl Beckerich….A warm & rugged Aran Sweater for men.
Cheryl’s overview of this project, “I designed this sweater for my friend, whose mum used to knit him sweaters as he was growing up, then rip them out and re-knit in a larger size as he grew. This sweater is going to serve more as a coat to be worn over other layers as he visits construction job sites.”
Uses bulky weight yarn.
#3. The Beauceron Men’s Pullover Knitting Pattern
The Beauceron is a unisex pullover sweater with a slip-stitch colourwork pattern (also called “mosaic colourwork”) that is easy and addictive to knit. It worked from the top down in one piece, without seams, but features “faux” seams on the shoulders and sides that give it a nice detail. Designed by Delz.
Project uses DK weight yarn.
#4. Machrihanish Vest Knitting Pattern
Neat and stylish traditional Fairisle vest. Designed by Kate Davies.
Worked in the round, with steeks, this colorful Fairisle vest has the option of being tapered to the waist for a neater, more contemporary masculine fit.
Uses fingering weight yarn
#5. Neighborly Men’s Cardigan Free Knitting Pattern
With the upcoming movie release of Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Lion Brand’s Neighborly Cardigan is an homage to America’s favorite neighbor. Whether you want to knit it for yourself or your favorite neighbor, the wearer is sure to appreciate the coziness of the Touch of Alpaca Bonus Bundles you’ll use to work it up.
#6. Perun Men’s Vest Knitting Pattern
Perfect for crisp winter days, this rugged vest is worked bottom up in one piece to the armholes. Then the front and back are worked separately to the shoulders which are joined using three needle bind off. Next stitches are picked up around the neckline to work the cozy stand-up collar. Finally the steek down the center front is cut and a zipper installed.
Uses worsted weight yarn.
Designed by Sarah Elizabeth Schmidt
#7. Cottongrass Pullover Knitting Pattern
The cottongrass jumper is named after the beautiful and resilient arctic plant. In our arctic home where vegetation is limited, the arctic cotton grass stands out, and is easily the tallest plant.
In summer, we run through the arctic cotton grass fields, handpicking them while basking in the midnight sun.
Uses DK weight yarn - originally knitted in Cardiff Cashmere Yarn but I also recommend KnitPick’s Capra DK Yarn which is a more affordable wool/cashmere blend.
#8. Fantomas Men’s Zip-Front Sweater Knitting Pattern
A classical men’s sweater, which is knit bottom-up completely seamless with a construction close to Elisabeth Zimmermann’s Saddle Shoulder Sweater. Body and sleeves are joined at the beginning of the armholes. You cast off later at the end of the collar.
The zipper closure is something that men like and the lining of the collar in contrasting yarn sets a nice accent. The zipper cover in thinner yarn enables to sew in the zipper easily and makes it looks nice and even.
A sweater to feel comfortable and look good.
The pattern contains many pictures to explain special techniques and how to sew in the zipper - what definitely is easy and quickly done.
Uses DK weight yarn
#9. The Montrealer Men’s Hoodie Knitting Pattern
It is a simple top-down, hooded pullover that can be adapted in so many ways, so feel free to use your creativity to make it your own!
Uses worsted weight yarn
#10. Marcel Cardigan Knitting Pattern
“Marcel” is worked seamlessly, from the bottom up. Sleeve stitches will be picked up around armhole, the sleeve caps will be shaped using short rows. Sleeves will be worked in the round. Neckline stitches and buttonhole band stitches will be picked up.
