10 Mens Cable Sweater Knitting Patterns

It can be difficult to find men’s sweater knitting patterns! I’ve been receiving a lot of requests lately for some mens’ sweater knitting patterns, especially cable knit sweaters.

You’ll find both pullovers and cardigans with cables here and there while others feature allover cable patterns.

What I love about these cable knit sweaters for men is that they are masculine, sophisticated, and look great on all body types.

In addition, I’ve been known to “borrow” my husband’s sweaters from time to time and these sweaters look great on guys and gals alike.

All of the sweaters you’ll find below are classically styled so your fella will wear them for many years to come.

Before we get to the guys’ cable sweater projects, you may want to check out some of our other popular knitting patterns for men including 10 best men’s sweater knitting patterns, 7 free men’s hat knitting patterns, and 10 free scarf knitting patterns for men.

10 Cable Sweater Knitting Patterns for Men

Men’s Cabled Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern

#1. Evo His Pullover Knitting Pattern

The shaped front and back panels of Evo’s richly textured, tactile design are as eye-catching as they are flattering. The braids (which are worked without the need for a cable needle) flanked by columns of twisted stitches and the twisted ribbed trims emphasize the clean, graphic lines of the sweater.

The simple reverse stockinette background keeps the look classic and understated. The sweater has a neat, but comfortable fit, which you can customize to your liking and style through optional shaping.

Evo is worked seamlessly from the top down. The sleeves are worked inside out, so you can work them in stockinette stitch instead of reverse stockinette stitch.
The pattern includes instructions for V-shaping, which is optional. Instructions for a sweater with and without shaping are given.

The Good Neighbor Cardigan Knitting Pattern - Mr Rogers inspired sweater!

#2. The Good Neighbor Cardigan Knitting Pattern

This unisex, zippered cardigan is inspired by Mr. Rogers’s sweaters (all of them knitted by his mum!). This project was designed in honor of Maxwell King’s biography The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers.

It’s worked in pieces from the bottom up and then seamed for stability, with set-in sleeves. The neckline is picked up and worked with short rows after the button placket has been faced for a zipper. You can find a tutorial on installing a zipper in the tutorials section of this site.

#5. Riverfolk Pullover Knitting Pattern

This sweater is made for the wind and the weather! A funnel neck with a tie can be pulled right up to your nose for those frosted mist days in the Pacific Northwest. The front pocket is perfect for a quick finger warm up when mittens are too much. The Riverfolk Pullover has a classic silhouette with a contemporary twist.

The Riverfolk Pullover is knit flat in pieces from the bottom up, with set-in sleeves and a funnel neck. Pouch pocket is worked without a top or bottom seam. I-cord is worked to form a drawstring for the collar.

This pattern includes both written instructions and charts.

#6. Yule Men’s Cable Sweater Knitting Pattern

This unisex pullover is worked in pieces from the bottom hems up to the shoulders. The front and back are then seamed together, and the sleeves are seamed and then set into the armhole openings.

The sleeves are worked with a cabled saddle shoulder, which continues up the center of the sleeves and up to the collar. Hems, cuffs and collar are worked with a 2 x 2 ribbing. The body of the sweater and the sleeves are worked with stylized staghorn cable patterns and seed stitch.

Classic Oak Men’s Cabled Cardigan Knitting Pattern

#8. Classic Oak Cardigan Knitting Pattern

Looking for a classic men’s cabled cardigan that will be a favourite for many years to come? Look no further than the Classic Oak Cardigan! The harmonious blend of three different stitch patterns is interesting to knit and very pleasing to the eye.

The large cable, flanked on each side by a smaller cable, is placed symmetrically on either side of the front and back, and is repeated down the sleeve.

Honeycomb stitch fills in the area in between the cables with an interesting texture, which when knit in brown tweed, is reminiscent of the bark on a mature oak tree. Stockinette stitch is used along the side and sleeve edges, to ensure straightforward and smooth seaming. The button band and short-row shaped collar are knit in one piece by picking up stitches.

#9. Anchorage Cardigan Knitting Pattern

The joy is in the details of the Anchorage Cardigan: twisting cables outline the saddle shoulders and slanted pockets, a zipper facing conceals the zipper tape, and an extrafine merino yarn emphasizes the simple knit-and-purl texture. This pullover is worked from the bottom up in pieces and then seamed.
