Are Interchangeable Knitting Needles Worth It?

If you’ve discovered the benefits of knitting with circular needles, chances are you’ve started amassing a stockpile of them.

They have so many wonderful uses because you can knit both in-the-round or back and forth.

However, it seems like every project requires a different needle length or size. You can spend a small fortune on round knitting needles.

It may be time to consider a set of interchangeable knitting needles. With interchangeable sets, you receive lots of needle sizes, known as needle tips. The kit will also come with cables in a variety of lengths.

By having the cables and tips separate, you’ll be able to mix and match them so you have every needle size needed on hand when needed.

Are interchangeable knitting needles good?

Not only do I think interchangeable knitting needles are good, I think they are great and worth the investment and here’s why. If you purchase individual circular needles individually it costs much more than purchasing a set. And, you won’t need to run to the store every time you need a different needle size. You’ll have the right size needles on hand hand ready to go.

6 Tips for Buying Interchangeable Knitting Needles

  1. Quality over quantity. I recommend choosing quality over quantity. You’ll have and use your needle set for years to come. It is worth it to buy a quality set for a few extra dollars.

  2. Not all interchangeable needle sets are the same. Be sure to read the label before buying. Needle sets include a wide variety of needle tips and cables so buy a set that includes your most often used sizes and cable lengths.

  3. Choose the best materials for YOU. Interchangeable needle sets are available in steel, plastic, wood, and bamboo. It’s important that you choose a set that fits your needs today. Steel needles, for example, are very slippery and difficult to control if you are new to knitting. Invest in a bamboo or plastic set now so that you can control your knitting. As you improve, you can move to a speedier set of wood or steel.

  4. Type of Join. Interchangeable needles usually click or screw together. Do you have a preference. It’s something to consider before choosing your first set.

  5. Don’t forget the extras! Most needle sets come with some extras and I like to think of those items as the icing on a very delicious cake. Most needle sets come in some sort of case to keep your interchangeable neat and organized. They may also include items such as stoppers, markers, cable extenders, needle gauges, and tools to help join and separate the needles. Take a look at the extras included in the set you want to buy.

  6. Consider specialty interchangeable sets. Are you a sock knitter? Then maybe you want to buy an interchangeable sock set so that you have all the long cables and thin needles sizes that sock knitting requires. Or maybe you’re into chunky knits. There are interchangeable knitting needles that cater to your needs as well! I’ve added links to both below.
