Will & Kate: Knit the Royal Wedding!

I'm a bit bleary eyed this morning. Why, because I stayed up almost the entire night engrossed in the Royal Wedding! I didn't mean for it to happen, just a little late night channel surfing and I saw the start of the wedding parade. Beautiful dresses and hats, amazing cars..I got sucked in!

Then I remembered a quirky, cool book so appropriate for today. Knit Your Own Royal Wedding
by Fiona Goble. Yes, the book teaches you how to knit your own royal family: Kate, Willam, Harry, Charles, Edward, Camilla, the priest, and of course the Queen. It also includes the Queen's adorable corgis. So if you can't be across the pond today enjoying the festivities, now you can knit your own royal family and keep the celebration going for years to come. Cheers to the happy couple!

PBS's Arthur takes on Knitting! (Arthur Unravels)

Arthur learns to knit!
My daughter was so excited to show me the latest eposide of PBS's Arthur. It's called Arthur Unravels. In it, Arthur takes on knitting! Arthur's grandma is an avid knitter and she teaches his little sister, DW. Arthur gets curious about knitting and she told him how spies used to knit secrets and codes into their knitting to send messages.

Arthur helps Buster with a dropped stitch!
This adorable episode shows Arthur as a closet knitter, afraid he'll be made fun of for knitting. Then, having a little knit-in with his best friend Buster, helping Buster with a dropped stitch, and finally a trip to the yarn store! The show wraps up with real kids going to a yarn shop, talking about why they love yarn and what they can create with it.
Kudos to Marc Brown and the PBS Arthur Show for helping to pass on knitting to another generation. After watching, it inspired my daughter to pick up her needles and get going on a new project. She's making her first Teddy Bear.
Arthur visits a yarn shop and learns
the difference between pink and fuchsia.

Mariposa Shawl Pattern, a surprise knitting find!

When I'm at the yarn show, my head is just exploding with ideas. It's great to come back from a show and put together all the new things I'm going to be able to share.  I thought I had it all covered, shown you everything I gathered from the yarn show and my favorite knitting ideas. That was until today, when my daughter pulled out the Flip Video. I discovered lots of awesome little things I wanted to tell you about! So be ready to see some treasures over the next few days...I'm so excited to show you!

The Mariposa Shawl is a pattern on our website and it features SWTC's beautiful Yin and Yang yarns. It's a PDF downloadable knitting pattern that you can get for FREE with any purchase of Yin or Yang. I absolutely fell in love with this shawl at the knitting show. Jonelle Beck of South West Trading Company was wearing it and the way the little sequin droplets of Yang yarn catch the light, it's stunning.  You can knit it using both Yin and Yang yarns or choose an all over glitz look by using all Yang.

Plymouth Vizions Yarn: Our Hottest Yarn for Spring Knitting!

Plymouth Vizions Yarn
with Garden Scarf Free Pattern
Creating a lot of clacking on knitter's needles this spring is Plymouth Vizions Yarn. This runaway hit is pretty, with almost a stained glass appeal. Vizions is a linen/rayon/nylon blend. I thought it would be super stiff, but it's not. It has almost a silky smooth feel and is nice to work with. I'm using it with my Denise Needles and I don't feel like it's too slippery or out of control (sometimes I feel that way with silky yarns). It knits up at a dk weight so it's great for lots of spring knitting projects. We really fell for all the beautiful color palettes in this yarn. Each ball is self striping and the combinations are so interesting; perfect spring tones and a few shades will look great when I have a bit of a summer tan.

I'm working away on a lattice style scarf. Want to knit one, too? Here's the free pattern!

Top 10 Lace Shawl Patterns for Spring

Sasha Lace Shawl Pattern
1 ball project from Fiesta Yarns
We've been seeing them everywhere, lace shawls for Spring. I love how light and airy they are while still keeping your shoulders warm. And the bonus for knitters, there are so many lace shawl and wrap patterns available to you! Many of them only require one ball of yarn, and there is something about knitting lace that is so gratifying. I'm not sure if it is the ability to choose a luxurious yarn like silk or alpaca, or if it's the interesting pattern that keeps my mind occupied, but lace knitting is certainly something that is hot this spring - and we can't seem to get enough of it, either!
